Childhood and Family
The Zaram'Dal family, at one time, were a renowned family of Warmages known for their command of fire and it's application in warfare. Mordecaii and his twin sister, Mendacia, spent their child hood in the city of Dalaran. Their father was a respected magister and high born, and friend to Kael'Thas Sunstrider and Aethas Sunreaver. Their mother, Andara Sholanan, had little magical proclivity, but was a respected socialite who helped her husband achieve status and recognition that his magical talents alone would not have granted him. Mordecaii was immediately enrolled in classes in Dalaran when he came of age, while his sister was instead shopped to lesser nobles in Silvermoon by her mother, seeking to further the status of Zaram'Dal.

Adolescence
Mordecaii was considered something of a misfit in his mage training. He was considered brilliant by his instructors, but he lacked focus and at test time relied solely on his inherent command of magic. He lacked the skilled refinement of a true mage, but somehow managed to power through his exams. He associated with magi of low repute, and was even accused of taking private lessons from Kel'Thuzad at one time. Mordecaii always sought the quickest path to power.

At one point he was suspended from class due to his burgeoning Bloodthistle trade he had set up to earn some coin. Despite being a gifted mage, his antics brought dishonor to his father, and the scorn of his mother.

The Scourge Invasion
Mordecaii's ties to Kel'Thuzad brought about an immediate inquisition and investigation into all of his published research in the Kirin'Tor. Although no evidence was found, the tensions at the time necessitated his immediate dismissal. Mordecaii returned to Silvermoon to a shattered High Borne way of life. His family's estate in ruins, Mordecaii's mother had become a drunk, and his father was one of the first to give into the thirst, becoming a wretched. Rather than dismay at the current state of affairs, Mordecaii saw opportunity.

While Kael'thas went to Outlands to find a cure for the thirst, Mordecaii delved into his own prior necromantic research. He travelled to the Shendralar library in Feralas, and even had himself smuggled into Stormwynd. His search for a cure took him to the Arathi Basin, in the ruins of Stromgarde.

It was there that The Master found him...
